Macho Connection

Written by admin | May 22, 2008

Champion 2-year-old Macho Uno (TrueNicks, SRO) is off to a bright start with a first crop - now 3-year-olds - which has already produced Wicked Style, who took the Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. III) and Keeneland Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. I); undefeated Withers Stakes (gr. III) winner Harlem Rocker; Macho Again, winner of the Derby Trial Stakes and runner-up in the Preakness (gr. I), and stakes winner Swifty Victress.

A look at the pedigrees of this quartet reveals some interesting occurrences. To start, there's the presence of Khaled. A son of Hyperion, bred by the Aga Khan and imported to the U.S. by Rex Ellsworth, Khaled is best known as sire of the great runner Swaps. Khaled is in the pedigree of all four Macho Uno stakes winners, and appears twice in the dam of Swifty Victress and twice in the granddam of Harlem Rocker. There is a very logical reason for Khaled to be a positive influence here, as he is a close relative to Aimee, the granddam of Blushing Groom (FR) (broodmare sire of Macho Uno).

Along with the Khaled comes some interesting clustering. Wicked Style's second dam is by Devil's Bag, and his granddam, Miss Swapsco combines Cohoes (by Mahmoud from the La Troienne family) with a mare by Khaled's son Swaps. Harlem Rocker's second dam is by Unreal Zeal, and that horse's granddam is very similarly-bred to Miss Swapsco, as she is by Cohoes out of a sister to Swaps. Macho Again is out of a mare by Wild Again, and his dam is by Khaled, out of a daughter of a Mahmoud mare. Swifty Victress is out of a mare by Lite the Fuse. His sire, Buckaroo, is out of a mare by No Robbery, a son of Swaps out of a mare by Bimelech, a five-eighths brother to the dam of Cohoes.

Macho Uno also has the Mahmoud/La Troienne combination, through The Axe II, a three-parts-brother to Cohoes (in two of Macho Uno's stakes winners). While this is all quite complex, the bottom line is that Macho Uno appears to throw to clusters of Khaled, Mahmoud, and La Troienne.
