Q & A -- An Outcross Pedigree vs. An A++ TrueNicks Ratings?

Written by aporter | Nov 24, 2009

Scott asks: When I run a TrueNicks with Candy Ride and one of my mares, Surf N Sand, it appears to be a complete outcross in the first five generations, but the nick is an A++. He's an excellent phenotype for the mare, so I'm very curious about the nick. Thank you in advance and keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoy having TrueNicks as a tool in my breeding decisions.

Alan's response: Thank you for the inquiry. Obviously we are not able to factor inbreeding into TrueNicks, but it's something that I do take into consideration in matings. In my experience, inbreeding and linebreeding patterns are so complex and intricate that the are not easily quantifiable, in the way that a sire line/broodmare sire line cross is. The pedigree of some stallions (such as Candy Ride (ARG) (TrueNicks,SRO)) dictates that their offspring will tend to have less close inbreeding than, say Dixie Union (TrueNicks,SRO) , who has Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew close up in his pedigree. There are a number of different sorts of patterns, and the Candy Ride/Surf N Sand mating is one that embraces an interesting pattern that is a little further back in the pedigree.

Ride the Rails (sire of Candy Ride) is inbred 4 x 3 to Alablue, the granddam of Seattle Slew's own grandsire, Boldnesian (a half-brother to the dam of Ride the Rails). Therefore, it's not surprising that he likes Seattle Slew. In addition, this pedigree has a considerable amount of linebreeding to the important family of Frizette. This is the female line of both Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew, and the South American horse, Farnesio (sire of the granddam of Candy Ride) is out of a mare by Cardanil II, who is not only from the Frizette family, but has that mare 5 x 6 x 5. Boston Harbor's sire, Capote is by Seattle Slew (granddam inbred to Frizette), with an extra line of Frizette via his broodmare sire, Bald Eagle. However, with this mare, you also have Never Bend, whose broodmare sire, Djeddah, is a three-parts-brother to Cardanil II.

Overall, the is a good nick, has strong supporting linebreeding, and a good physical match, so it look "all systems go" to me!

     Hello , Hill'n'Dale farm had contacted me about my broodmare "Wasted Words" a 2005 filly by Honour and Glory out of Fact of Matter by Summer Squall.I was interested if they would like to do a foal sharing agreememt ? The gentleman told me that they did a nicking between my mare and their stallion El Corredor which resulted in an A++ I haven't made any plans for my mare as of yet,but I was looking for a stallion from the AP Indy line ,since my mare is void of Mr. P and Bold Ruler !

Hi Shelly,

I see that there are already two stakes winners by Gone West (grandsire of El Corredor) line stallions out of mares by Honour and Glory so there is something to recommend on that front. El Corredor is one of the relatively small group of stallions that have sired grade one winners on dirt, turf and all-weather. We had a very promising maiden special weight winner by him at Churchill on Thanksgiving Day.

A.P. Indy's sons would also be interesting here, giving inbreeding to Weekend Surprise (dam of Summer Squall and A.P. Indy). Somewhat similar to Stevie Wonderboy. Hill n' Dale stand an interesting stallion in Indygo Shiner that would suit your mare well.

How about you run a TrueNicks Broodmare Analysis Report. It is certainly going to help you bring down the options!

Hi Garfs29,

I could only see one stakes winner by Skip Away out of a Seattle Slew mare (although the only stakes winner out of a Skip Away mare is also by a stallion who has Seattle Slew as his broodmare sire).

If there is a connection, it would probably be that Skip Away is out of a mare by a horse bred on the Nasrullah/Princequillo cross, and that Seattle Slew is bred on an extended version of that cross, and his broodmare sire, Poker, is a reverse.
