Tiznow On a Roll as Broodmare Sire
Long-established Taylor Made/WinStar Farm stallion Tiznow has been steadily adding broodmare sire credentials to what he's already accomplished as a sire. The 23-year-old son of Cee's Tizzy made a huge jump in the BloodHorse broodmare sire rankings last year, jumping from 51st place in 2018 as determined by progeny earnings to 16th place by the end of 2019. This spike in earnings paralleled an extraordinary jump in elite performers produced by Tiznow's daughters. In 2019 alone, Tiznow as a broodmare sire was represented by 200 winners and 20 black-type winners in the Northern Hemisphere, which represents 30% of his total winners (662) and 57% of his total black-type winners (35) worldwide through Aug. 10. Tiznow's top performers as a broodmare sire last year included four North American graded stakes winners—grade 1 winners Tiz the Law and Come Dancing, and grade 3 winners Comical and Mr. Money, who also both placed in grade 1 stakes. Comical finished second in the Chandelier Stakes (G1) and third in the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1), while Mr. Money was second in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). Tiz the Law, a son of WinStar Farm's second-crop sire Constitution, has gone from strength to strength since 2019. Sackatoga Stable's sophomore colt is expected to be the morning-line favorite for the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) from his consecutive wins in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3), Curlin Florida Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1), and Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1). He won this year's grade 1s by a combined 13 1/3 lengths. It bodes well for Tiznow's future growth as a broodmare sire that his daughters have been successful when mated not only to North America's top two sires at the moment—Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief and Gainesway's Tapit—but equally successful when mated to several of these sires' sons. Out of Tiznow mares, Tapit's best runners include grade 2 stakes-placed winner Royal Obsession, multiple stakes-placed winner Awestruck, who is a half sister to Tiz the Law; and grade 3-placed winners Benergy and Portos, who placed in this year's Withers Stakes (G3). Besides Tiz the Law, Tapit's son Constitution has sired grade 3-placed winner Our Country and stakes-placed winner Kansas Kis. Spendthrift's second-crop sire Race Day (a son of Tapit) also was successful with Tiznow's daughter Tizette, who produced three-time Puerto Rican listed stakes winner Consultora. The cross of Tiznow daughters with the Harlan's Holiday sire line, which includes Into Mischief, has been even more fruitful. Harlan's Holiday sired grade 2-placed winner Duff One, while Into Mischief has sired five black-type performers so far out of Tiznow mares. Into Mischief's runners include Comical, grade 2-placed winner Tiz Mischief, and stakes-placed winners Just Right, Caroline the Great, and 2020 Tyro Stakes runner-up Spicy Marg. Expatriate stallion Shanghai Bobby, another son of Harlan's Holiday who now stands at Arrow Stud in Japan, has sired three black-type performers out of Tiznow mares: grade 1-placed winner Extra Hope, and stakes-placed winners Shanghai Rain and Spirit of Shanghai. At least one Into Mischief son has started carrying on the family tradition with Tiznow mares. Goldencents, who won consecutive runnings of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) in 2013-14, sired Mr. Money, the winner of four grade 3 stakes in 2019. The 4-year-old colt is the most successful runner produced to date by the winning Tiznow daughter Plenty O'Toole. He was bought as a yearling for $130,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by J. Stevens Bloodstock out of Woods Edge Farm consignment. Mr. Money, now raced by Allied Racing Stable in partnership with Spendthrift, has career earnings of nearly $1.3 million so far. Curiously, Tiznow daughters have become more affordable at public auction over the past three years. Broodmares and broodmare prospects by Tiznow averaged $114,780 from 41 sold in 2017. The sire's broodmare average slid to $57,367 (47 sold) in 2018 and again to $41,856 (40) sold in 2019. Meanwhile the market still continues to recognize the value of Tiznow's daughters' foals. Tiznow's lifetime yearling average as a broodmare sire is $80,558, but his average over the past three years (2017-19) has been tracking higher at $91,638 from 269 sold.
