Last month, eighty-one veterinary students from ten North American veterinary colleges attended the fifth annual Cavalcade Student Education Event Day hosted virtually by The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft, Rhinebeck Equine, and Millbrook Equine. That’s a 69% increase over last year’s participation and an additional three schools. Our first four events took place in person at The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft and Rhinebeck Equine, whereas this year's event was 100% virtual. These three practices partnered to give equine focused veterinary students the opportunity to virtually tour clinics, attend educational sessions, and learn about externships and internships.
The five hour virtual event opened with a quick orientation followed by an introduction to all three practices and presenters. Next, Dr. Alison Clode, DVM, DACVO from Rhinebeck Equine demonstrated the components of the equine ophthalmic exam and discussed clinical case images. Dr. AllieCatalino and Dr. Betsy Colarusso from the Equine Clinic at OakenCroft discussed joint injection positioning and technique. Dr. Laura H. Javsicas, VMD, DACVIM at Rhinebeck Equine spoke about how to perform an equine neurologic exam, grading of neurologic lesions, and neurolocalization. She then presented two case examples.
The event wrapped up with a Round Table Panel Discussion where Dr. Ryan Penno, DVM of Equine Clinic at OakenCroft and Dr. Miranda Gosselin, DVM from Millbrook Equine discussed the business side of veterinary medicine. Topics included the current demographic and business statistics on equine practice, the difference between internships and externships, job hunting and navigating the job offer, and student debt cautions and pitfalls.
