Cesario, who won grade 1 races on two continents and has the distinction of producing three stallion sons at stud in Japan, died at Northern Farm Feb. 27 aged 19.

Successful in both the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1) and American Oaks Invitational Stakes (G1T) in 2005, the daughter of Special Week was trained by Katsuhiko Sumii, who has in turn received her star progeny and was saddened by the news on the eve of his retirement from the ranks.

From the paddocks Cesario has produced a list headed by Epiphaneia, winner of the Japan Cup (G1) and his domestic Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger, G1) who has already sired the Japanese Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Daring Tact.

Runner-up in the first two jewels of Japan's Triple Crown earlier this year, regally bred Epiphaneia broke through for a classic win in smashing style in the Kikuka Sho (Jpn-I, Japanese St. Leger) at Kyoto.

Her other sons include leading juvenile and Satsuki Sho (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas, G1) winner Saturnalia, new to Shadai Stallion Station, and Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1) scorer Leontes, whose first crop stars include last weekend's Al Rajhi Bank Saudi Derby winner Pink Kamehameha.

Cesario died due to what was described as "the hemorrhagic shock due to ruptured arteries around the uterus".

Northern Farm's Katsumi Yoshida said: "It was suddenly so I was just surprised and felt that my chest tightened. Not only the brilliant race results of winning the Japanese and American Oaks, but also the brilliant broodmare who produced three sires—Epiphaneia who produced the fillies' triple crown winner, Leontes whose son won the Saudi Derby recently, and Saturnalia who entered the stud from this year. I have only words of thanks to her.

"It is a pity that Cesario, who laid the foundation of the farm, died, but now I am full of wishes (for her) to sleep peacefully."

Sumii added: "It stuck in my heart. She has supported me as a trainer for a long time from the first time of my trainer life to the end of it (on Sunday)."

Cesario, who was out of Sadler's Wells mare and useful Jim Bolger performer Kirov Premiere, won four of her five career starts. She has a winning 4-year-old daughter, First Folio, still in training and a 3-year-old Maurice colt named Lupercalia, who broke his duck in a maiden at Chukyo Racecourse in late January. She has a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa still to represent her.
