Connections Consider Kentucky Oaks for Soothsay

After watching Soothsay successfully stretch out from a six-furlong maiden win in her debut to score a victory in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) April 3 at Santa Anita Park, the filly's connections have seen her bounce back enough to consider the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) April 30 at Churchill Downs. After watching the daughter of Distorted Humor use a sustained drive to hold off Beautiful Gift in the Santa Anita Oaks, trainer Richard Mandella wanted some time to consider the trip to Kentucky, noting the Kentucky Oaks would be another significant challenge for the lightly raced filly who made her debut Feb. 26. While a final decision hasn't been made, Mandella said April 9 the 1 1/8-mile test at Churchill Downs is in the mix. "She came out of the race good, and the Kentucky Oaks would be a race we're thinking about as long as she comes along strong enough," the Racing Hall of Fame trainer told Santa Anita publicity. Bred in Kentucky by Raydelz Stable, Soothsay is campaigned by Claiborne Farm, Perry and Ramona Bass, and Adele Dilschneider. Soothsay is the first stakes winner out of grade 2-winning Bernardini mare Spellbound, who boasts two winners from as many starters. Spellbound is a half sister to grade 3 winner Kid Cruz.
