Goldencents Hospitalized, Responding Well to Treatment

Spendthrift Farm contacted Goldencents shareholders June 17 to notify them the 11-year-old son of Into Mischief had been sent to Hagyard Equine Medical Institute due to a respiratory issue because many have insurance covering their lifetime breeding rights. "Notifying the shareholders was really a formality because we knew some had insurance and that notifying the insurance company is required when a horse is sent to a clinic," said Ned Toffey, general manager for Spendthrift, June 18. "We wanted them to be covered." At Hagyard, Toffey said Goldencents responded immediately to treatment and has improved. "He was comfortable overnight, and his vitals were all normal today. He'll stay a couple more days for treatment and further diagnostics," he said. Goldencents became Into Mischief's first grade 1 winner when he won the 2013 Santa Anita Derby (G1) and went on to win consecutive runnings of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) in 2013-14. He is the leading North American fourth-crop sire by cumulative progeny earnings and the leader by number of black-type performers with 31. For 2021, the stallion leads his sire class by number of winners (65), black-type stakes winners (five), black-type performers (11), graded stakes winners (three), and by year-to-date progeny earnings ($3,164,713). His top performer this year is 5-year-old grade 2 winner By My Standards, who finished second June 5 in the Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1).
