Mshawish to Stand Privately for Al Thani in Qatar

Al Shaqab Racing's dual-surface grade 1 winner and top 12 third-crop sire Mshawish will be relocated next month to Qatar, where he will stand privately for Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, according to the stable's U.S. racing adviser, Bradley Weisbord. "Sheikh Al Thani didn't want the stallion to end up somewhere else. He wants to support him because the horse was important to him, so he is bringing him home where he'll be part of his breeding program and have a good life," Weisbord said. Al Thani owned 50% of Mshawish and bought out other syndicate members in order to export the stallion. The horse is expected to leave the U.S. for Qatar Dec. 3. Mshawish is a 12-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro and bred in Kentucky by Occidental Thoroughbreds out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thunder Bayou. He was eventually sold at the 2012 Arqana Saint-Cloud May 2-Year-Old Breeze-Up Sale for €170,000 ($219,589) from the Brown Island Stables consignment to Mandore International Agency and then raced by Al Shaqab. Mshawish won five graded stakes, including the 2015 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1T) and the 2016 Donn Handicap (G1). He retired to stud at Taylor Made Stallions with $2,421,351 in earnings. Mshawish has sired 97 winners that include grade 3 winners Sainthood, Bellharbour Music, and Grano de Oro and stakes winner Music Amore. His progeny have earned more than $5.7 million.
