New York Owner, Breeder Bacon Dies at 95

Longtime New York-based owner and breeder Sanford Bacon died April 12 at the age of 95 in South Florida. Bacon's death was initially reported by the Daily Racing Form. Among Bacon's top runners was Say Florida Sandy, a New York-bred son of Personal Flag that Bacon bred and owned during his first year on the track from the summer of 1996 through the fall of 1997 before he was claimed for $70,000. Throughout his career that ended in 2003 at the age of 9, Say Florida Sandy won 33 of 98 starts. He collected 19 stakes victories, including five at the graded level, and earnings of $2,085,408. Included in his many New York-bred accolades are two Horse of the Year titles in 2000 and 2001. Bacon also bred and owned Dancin Renee, a half sister to Say Florida Sandy, who won 14 of 21 starts for earnings of $490,258. A seven-time stakes winner, Dancin Renee won the Honorable Miss Stakes (G3) at Saratoga Race Course as part of a seven-race win streak to close her career and take home New York-bred Horse of the Year honors in 1997. Bacon then bred and owned her six-time stakes-winning daughter, Risky Rachel, who won nine of 27 starts for earnings of $493,736. Bacon was also a part owner of 2020 Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Ete Indien.
