Volatile Filly, Authentic Colt Turn Heads at Timonium

In terms of eye-catching times, a Volatile filly and an Authentic colt stood out among the juveniles that breezed at the May 14 under tack show ahead of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Juveniles cataloged as Hips 1-200 breezed Tuesday on the fast track at Timonium. Hips 201-400 are scheduled to breeze Wednesday, beginning at 8 a.m. ET, with Hips 401-585 scheduled for Thursday beginning at the same time. Eight workers into Tuesday morning's proceedings, a Volatile filly cataloged as Hip 12 displayed an efficient stride and appeared light on her feet as she blazed a furlong in :10 flat, which would hold up as the fastest eighth-mile of the session. Consigned by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, the chestnut filly is out of the twice stakes-placed Exchange Rate mare Exchange Cat, who has produced three winners from as many starters, including grade 2-placed Grit and Curiosity, a Macho Uno gelding. Exchange Cat is a half sister of two stakes-placed runners. Bred in Kentucky by Newtownanner Stud Farm, the filly sold to Hartley/de Renzo last year for $230,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where she was consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent. The filly was an out at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Hartley/de Renzo, agent, would just be getting started Tuesday, as later in the morning a long-striding Authentic colt they consigned registered the fastest quarter-mile time of :21 1/5. Bred in Florida by Bridlewood Farm, the colt (Hip 59) is out of the grade 1-winning Uncle Mo mare Gomo, who at age 2 captured the 2015 Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. First-crop sire Authentic, a son of five-time leading sire Into Mischief, won the 2020 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) to earn Horse of the Year honors. Hartley/de Renzo went to $300,000 to purchase the colt at last year's Keeneland September sale, where he was consigned by @Bridlewood Farm (Gainesway agent). He did not reach his reserve at the OBS March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after a top bid of $385,000. Four juveniles completed a furlong in :10 1/5 seconds Tuesday: Hip 10, a daughter of Liam's Map; Hip 46, a son of freshman sire Thousand Words; Hip 83, a daughter of Uncle Mo; and Hip 187, a son of Good Magic. Consigned by Camelot Acres Racing & Sales, agent, the Liam's Map filly is out of the unraced Into Mischief mare Estoril, who is a half sister to grade 3 winner Tide of the Sea and two stakes-placed runners. Consigned as the property of Shamrock Stable, the Thousand Words colt is out of the winning Tiz Wonderful mare Georgia, who has produced two winners form three starters. Consigned by Pike Racing at Highlander, agent, the Uncle Mo filly is out of grade 3 winner Hot City Girl, whose first starter is a winner. Hot City Girl is a half sister to 2015 champion female sprinter La Verdad. Consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds (Steven Venosa), the Good Magic colt is the third foal out of the stakes-winning J Be K mare Money or Love, a half-sister to multiple grade 1 winner and sire World of Trouble.
