Not This Time Gets Sharp Maiden Winner at Woodbine

This column highlights the performances of maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are graded/group winners, or have dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners, in particular, who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners. Woodbine Overshadowed on Woodbine Mile day by the glittering grade 1 conquests of her stablemates And One More Time and Win for the Money was the maiden victory by the Mark Casse-trained No Time in the second race Sept. 14. One of the last foals out of the two-time grade 1-producing mare Count to Three, No Time was a gate-to-wire winner in a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies. She became the sixth winner for her blue hen dam and was Casse's third victory on a star-studded Woodbine card. No Time's win followed up a stellar week for Taylor Made stallion Not This Time. The sire of world record-setting sprinter Cogburn, winner of this year's Jaipur (G1T) and Ainsworth Turf Sprint (G2T) stakes, Not This Time was the No. 2-ranked sire by gross progeny sold through the first week of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Three of the stallion's yearlings commanded seven-figure price tags during the first three sessions. Unlike her two grade 1-winning half siblings, Count Again and Ransom the Moon, No Time was able to put the pieces together early in her career. Making her second start after showing little sprinting on the Woodbine synthetic, No Time skipped to the front under John Velazquez and never looked back, holding on for a one-length score after setting fractions of :23.40, :47.44, and 1:12.64. She dashed home in sub :12-second final eighths to clock the 1 1/16 miles in a respectable 1:41.86 over a firm course. Ontario-bred No Time, owned by longtime Casse client Gary Barber, was purchased at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale for $250,000 out of the St George Sales consignment. No Time's half brothers Count Again and Ransom the Moon were multiple grade 1 winners in Southern California. Count Again bankrolled $1.085 million, winning graded stakes from ages 4 through 6 for trainer Phil D'Amato. The Awesome Again gelding enjoyed his biggest success as a 6-year-old when he rolled to victories in the 2022 Frank E. Kilroe (G1T) and Shoemaker Mile (G1T) stakes. Ransom the Moon, by Malibu Moon, fell short of the million dollar mark with $884,829 in earnings but still captured consecutive runnings of the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) in 2017-2018.
