Janney Breeding Stock to be Dispersed at Keeneland
Stuart Janney III soon will offer his broodmares at auction but he plans to continue to race Thoroughbreds in the years ahead. Keeneland announced Sept. 30 that it will catalog 13 broodmares—in foal to such stallions as Good Magic, Life Is Good, and Not This Time—and two broodmare prospects in the dispersal of his bloodstock at its 81st November Breeding Stock Sale, which will begin Nov. 5 and run nine sessions through Nov. 13. Claiborne Farm is handling the consignment. Janney, chairman of The Jockey Club, said Monday that he plans to race the horses he has in training, as well as the yearlings and horses foaled this year as they reach racing age. He also said Shug McGaughey, his longtime trainer, will continue to condition those runners. Janney, 76, said with his children busy with career pursuits, the dispersal made sense. "The horses I have in training and the young horses coming up figure to carry me along for several more years in racing, and I could even buy some young horses or go in as a partner," said Janney, a lifelong owner and breeder. He was introduced to racing through his parents, Stuart and Barbara, who bred and owned the beloved filly Ruffian, a Racing Hall of Famer who was foaled at Claiborne and is buried there, and such horses as grade 2 winner and sire Icecapade and grade 1 winner and sire Private Terms. For many years, the Janney family has boarded mares at Claiborne. In 2013, Janney raced Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb in partnership with Phipps Stable. His other top racehorses include graded stakes winners Ironicus, Data Link, Hit It Rich, On Leave, Hymn Book and Air Support. Claiborne's Seth Hancock said, "The relationship between the Janney family and Claiborne goes back even before the days of Ruffian. No one has shown more energy, passion, and love for the game than Stuart." These Janney mares are cataloged in Book 1 on Nov. 5: In a Hurry, a stakes-winning, multiple graded stakes-placed daughter of Blame in foal to War Front. Mata Mua, a winning daughter of Arch who is the dam of grade 3 winner Scarlett Sky. A half sister to grade 3 winner My Impression, she is in foal to Life Is Good. Secure Connection, a winning daughter of Data Link who is a half sister to Scarlett Sky and is in foal to Not This Time. Session 2 on Nov. 6 includes these Janney horses: Gun Boat, a winning stakes-placed daughter of War Front out of grade 3 winner Onus cataloged as a broodmare prospect. Hold Harmless, a winning daughter of Blame who is the dam of stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Limited Liability. My Impression, a grade 3-winning daughter of Sky Mesa in foal to Candy Ride (ARG). On Leave, a multiple graded stakes-winning daughter of War Front in foal to Street Sense. She is a half sister to grade 2 winners and sires Ironicus and Norumbega as well as grade 3 winners Hunting and Quiet Harbor. Onus, a grade 3-winning daughter of Blame in foal to Violence. She is the dam of Gun Boat. Pruning, a daughter of Uncle Mo who is a half sister to Onus and is in foal to Good Magic Additional Janney mares in the catalog are in foal to Maclean's Music, Munnings, Silver State, and War of Will. The second broodmare prospect is Take a Break, a 4-year-old winning filly by Quality Road out of On Leave. "Stuart Janney and his horses have long represented quality and class, and Keeneland is honored to present this dispersal at the November Sale," Keeneland vice president of sales Tony Lacy said. "Mr. Janney has developed these bloodlines for generations and these families will be highly prized by breeders and owners." The November Sale catalog will be available online Oct. 1. Print catalogs will be mailed Oct. 11. Frank Angst added comments from Stuart Janney III to this edited release from Keeneland.
