Curlin Filly Tops Day 3 at Fasig-Tipton October at 500k

At nearly the end of the session, a filly by Curlin sold for $500,000 to Gary Barber to top Day 3 of Fasig-Tipton's October Yearlings Sale Oct. 23. Hip 1195 is out of the multiple graded stakes-producing mare Achalaya, making the filly a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner and now incoming stallion Casa Creed. The filly was bred in New York by 30 Year Farm, and was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. She was a buy-back at Fasig-Tipton's The Saratoga Sale at $475,000. "Curlin is one of Gary's favorite sires," said trainer Mark Casse on behalf of Barber. "The mare's been such a great producer. I train the 2-year-old filly out of her for Live Oak, Charlotte's Heart, who broke her maiden first time out at Saratoga, and then was second in a stakes at Woodbine. So, it's a real live family. "I looked at videos and stuff and I think she has grown up (since the Saratoga Sale). I saw her at Saratoga, she was a little immature, I think she's matured, in the last couple of months. Obviously, to make the Saratoga Sale takes a good specimen of a horse." "I'm thrilled that we got the $500,000," said Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency. "I think she's worth every penny of it; she's a beautiful filly. She's just a later-developing filly; we had her at Saratoga, and she's improved so much since Saratoga. She's probably going to be a runner because everything the mare throws has been a runner." Wednesday's session saw 288 head sell of the 342 offered, for a total of $14,139,500, and an average of $49,095 and median of $20,000. Fifty-four horses failed to meet their reserve, resulting in an RNA rate of 15.8%. "Once again, similar to last night, the sales topper was sold in the last 15 hip numbers," said Boyd Browning Jr., president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton. "It's been a really fun three days so far, in terms of just seeing the level of energy, the level of activity, it's been encouraging in that regard." Mahmud Mouni purchased the second-highest-priced yearling of the session, a colt by Into Mischief out of the Yes It's True mare Shopit, making him a half brother to multiple graded stakes-placed Shoplifted. Hip 855 hails from the family of grade 1 winner Miss Shop and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Seize the Grey. He was the fifth purchase for Mouni on behalf of client Emad Tablci during the sale, totaling $1.02 million for the five purchases thus far. Last year's third session saw similar results, with a gross of $14,830,700 from 273 who changed hands. The average was $54,325, with a median of $25,000. A 18.8% RNA rate represented the 63 horses who failed to meet their reserve. "We're looking forward to the final day tomorrow, and expect the trends to continue," said Browning, "We're three-quarters of the way through the sale, and statistically, all the indicators are positive. We might have a record gross if things continue along these ways. But, most importantly we find new homes for these horses, and we're getting fair prices." Fasig-Tipton's October Yearling Sale concludes Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. ET with Hips 1213-1614 set to go through the ring. As of Wednesday evening, Fasig-Tipton had reported 51 outs.
