Grand Stud Buys G1 Winner Surge Capacity for $3.6M

Grade 1 stakes winner Surge Capacity, carrying her first foal, by Into Mischief, sold for $3.6 million to Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International on behalf of Japan's Grand Stud during Fasig-Tipton's The November Sale Nov. 4. ELiTE consigned the mare as agent. A 4-year-old daughter of 2016 champion grass horse Flintshire (GB), Surge Capacity (Hip 197) raced as a homebred for Klaravich Stables. In 2023, she won the Matriarch Stakes (G1T), Valley View Stakes (G3T), and the Lake George Stakes (G3T). She made only one start this year, finishing fourth in the Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T), and retired with four wins and a second from six starts and earnings of more than $547,000. "She was a collection item," de Seroux said. "She's a fantastic race mare, fantastic pedigree, young, so everything going for her; in foal to a great horse." Surge Capacity is out of stakes winner Strong Incentive (Warrior's Reward), making her a half sister to grade 1 winner Ways and Means (Practical Joke) and grade 3 winner Highly Motivated (Into Mischief). De Seroux said plans for Surge Capacity have not been discussed but that she will most likely head to Japan. He also signed the ticket on behalf of Narvick Int'l/Grand Stud for Hip 166—On Alert, a graded stakes-placed daughter of Medaglia d'Oro in foal to Charlatan, for $850,000. The 5-year-old is out of a half sister to the dams of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Sierra Leone and Forever Young (JPN), who finished third in the Classic. During last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale, de Seroux went to $4.2 million to buy group 1 winner Sauterne (FR) (Hip 178) on behalf of Narvick Int'l/ Grand Stud. They also purchased the Arrogate filly And Tell Me Nolies, for $2.3 million. "At that level, you have to keep going, if you want them," he said on the price of Surge Capacity. "It's been tough, but we got the ones we bid on."
