Durante Draws Field of 13 2-Year-old Fillies at Del Mar

A field of 13 2-year-old fillies—three of them maidens and eight exiting maiden races—have been entered for the $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes (G3T) going a mile on the turf at Del Mar Nov. 30. Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing's Supa Speed, trained by John Sadler, is the 7-2 morning-line favorite. Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms, the Justify filly was a $460,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for the Boersma family's Flying Dutchmen operation, which signed the ticket under a previously used moniker, Boardshorts Stables. Supa Speed won her debut going five furlongs on the Del Mar turf Aug. 1 and followed that up with a game second-place finish Sept. 7 in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes going a mile. After failing to draw into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T), she tried open company in the Nov. 1 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes but finished 12th while encountering repeated trouble. Supa Speed gets a rider switch to Flavien Prat Saturday. Sea Runner, a homebred Gun Runner filly for Cuyathy, is next on the morning line at 9-2. She finished third, 2 1/2 lengths back of Supa Speed, in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf. Sea Runner dropped back to the maiden ranks after that stakes placing and earned her diploma Oct. 4 going a mile on the Santa Anita Park turf. Sea Runner is a half to Cuyathy's grade 1 winner Johannes, who finished second in this year's Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T).
