Winter Weather Forces Parx, Turfway to Call Off Racing

Winter weather in Bensalem, Pa., continues to wreak havoc on live racing at Parx Racing as the track canceled its Jan. 6 card because of snow. The National Weather Service forecast predicts one to three inches of accumulation during daytime snowstorms in the area Monday. A winter storm also forced Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., to cancel its Jan. 9 card. The abandonment of Monday's 11-race card marks the fourth full-card cancellation in Parx's past seven scheduled race days. Inclement weather and below-freezing temperatures caused Parx to cancel racing Dec. 23, 24, and 28. The track raced full cards Dec. 30-31 before high winds and cold temperatures forced it to cancel the last half of the Jan. 1 card after just five races. For the third time out of the four cancellations, the exit of Parx from the wagering menu has left horseplayers with two or fewer tracks to choose from in the United States for the day. On Monday, Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course ran an eight-race card in northeastern Ohio. Turf Paradise will hold nine races, six of which are for Thoroughbreds, in Phoenix. Parx is scheduled to resume live racing Jan. 7 with an 11-race card that begins at 11:35 a.m. ET. Mahoning Valley and Turf Paradise are again scheduled to be the only other tracks conducting live racing Tuesday.
