Oaklawn, Turfway Adjust Schedules After Winter Storms

The Midwest was hit hard by winter weather during the week of Jan. 6-12, and racetracks that were impacted are beginning to make adjustments to their schedules to make up for lost cards. After canceling racing Jan. 10-12, Oaklawn Park announced Jan. 14 that it will add a Jan. 30 card. The decision was made in collaboration with the Arkansas Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. "We will continue to work with the HBPA in looking at the potential for additional race days later in the meet," Oaklawn Park said in a press release. Live racing returns to Oaklawn Jan. 17-20. The $150,000 Pippin Stakes, originally scheduled for Jan. 11, will take place Jan. 19. Likewise, Turfway Park lost its entire Jan. 8-12 race week due to winter storms and below-freezing temperatures. To help compensate, Turfway plans to card 10 races each race day beginning Jan. 15. The $125,000 Likely Exchange Stakes, originally scheduled for Jan. 11, will take place Jan. 24. However, Turfway is not out of the woods yet, as extreme cold is again forecast Wednesday night. To accommodate, Wednesday's first post has been adjusted to 4 p.m. ET instead of the originally scheduled 5:55 p.m. The 10 races will be spaced approximately 28 minutes apart until race 10 goes off around 8:02.
