Barnes, Rodriguez Put in Final Works for San Felipe

Barnes and Rodriguez, candidates to run in the March 1 San Felipe Stakes (G2) for 3-year-olds, each worked in company Feb. 23 for trainer Bob Baffert. Joining that pair on the tab was stablemate Citizen Bull, winner of the Robert B. Lewis (G2) Feb. 1 at Santa Anita Park. Barnes worked in company with fellow 3-year-old Mellencamp, who is also nominated to the San Felipe. Barnes was clocked going six furlongs in 1:12 1/5. By Into Mischief, Barnes is a perfect 2-for-2 including a win in the San Vicente (G2) going seven furlongs Jan. 4 at Santa Anita. The San Felipe would be Barnes' first time racing around two turns. Mellencamp worked five furlongs in 1:00 1/5. A $775,000 colt by Constitution, Mellencamp is winless in four starts. He most recently finished second to Baeza, who is now pointed to the Santa Anita Derby (G1), in a one-mile maiden heat Feb. 14 at Santa Anita. Rodriguez, who was second to Citizen Bull in the Lewis, worked in company with La Canada (G3) winner Cavalieri. Rodriguez and Cavalieri were each clocked going five furlongs in :59 3/5, which tied as the third-fastest works at the distance. Cavalieri is a candidate for the Beholder Mile (G1) March 8. Citizen Bull, last year's champion 2-year-old, worked six furlongs in 1:13. He is nominated to the San Felipe but is expected to wait for the April 5 Santa Anita Derby. San Felipe nominee Berlin Wall worked five furlongs in 1:00 4/5. Trained and co-owned by Steve Knapp, the Practical Joke colt most recently graduated via disqualification versus state-breds going six furlongs Feb. 12 at Santa Anita.
