Journalism, Thorpedo Anna Lead Latest NTRA Polls
Journalism and Thorpedo Anna continue to lead the latest Thoroughbred polls announced April 15 by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. The polls cover racing performances through April 13. Journalism is well ahead the Top 3-Year-Old Poll, representing horses coming up to and through the Triple Crown. The three-race series begins May 3 with the Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs, is followed by the May 17 Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course, and concludes with the June 7 Belmont Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. Sandman, Tappan Street, Rodriguez, and Sovereignty round out the top five. Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Journalism attracted 29 of the 30 first-place votes in the poll from participating media, with Florida Derby (G1) winner Tappan Street the other. The new addition in the top 10 this week is Burnham Square at No. 7. He rallied to win the April 8 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Reigning Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna, coming off a win in the April 12 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park, secured 25 of the 30 first-place votes in the Top Thoroughbred Poll. Second-place White Abarrio drew two first-place votes and Locked three such votes, though the latter still trails White Abarrio due to a lower overall point tally based on other voters ranking White Abarrio higher than Locked. The Top Thoroughbred Poll continues until after the Breeders' Cup and represents horses competing for Horse of the Year. The full standings for both polls can be found online.
