O'Neill Earns 3,000th Win as Hollywood Meet Concludes

Trainer Doug O'Neill picked up two wins at Santa Anita Park June 15 and with them achieved the latest milestone in his career—3,000 wins. The victory by Hero Or Zero in the eighth race at Santa Anita, a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds, secured the mark for the Southern California-based trainer. Earlier in Sunday's card, another juvenile, Pavlovian, earned the trainer his 2,999th triumph. O'Neill now has a record of 3,000-2,766-2,538 from 18,739 starts. He has earned $170,731,788 and has a 16% win rate. O'Neill is 40th all-time in wins. His career has been filled with highlights, including wins in the Kentucky Derby (G1) with Nyquist and I'll Have Another, as well as a Preakness Stakes (G1) victory with the latter. O'Neill has also won at the Breeders' Cup with Nyquist and Stevie Wonderboy taking the Juvenile (G1), Goldencents winning consecutive editions of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Maryfieldclaiming the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, and Thor's Echo taking the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). Meanwhile, as Santa Anita's Hollywood meet wrapped up Sunday, trainer Phil D'Amato captured his seventh Santa Anita training title. He had 27 wins from 112 starts and earned $1,572,478. John Sadler was second with 19 wins. Antonio Fresu claimed the top jockey honor with 34 wins from 150 starts. He also led in earnings with $1,770,586. The top owner at the meet was Nick Alexander, who had 11 wins, two more than Hronis Racing. His 24 starts produced winnings of $293,220, which was second among owners.
