Field of Gold, Ombudsman Vault to Top Slot in WBR
Through the first seven months of the year, there are three horses tied for the first slot on Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings. Saudi Cup (G1) hero Forever Young (JPN), the existing WBR leader, has now been joined by Royal Ascot standouts Field of Gold (IRE) and Ombudsman (IRE). All three horses share a rating of 127. Both Field of Gold and Ombudsman impressed with victories during the Royal Ascot meeting in June. Juddmonte homebred Field of Gold won the St James's Palace Stakes (G1) by 3 1/2 lengths to improve his rating to 127 from 123. The son of Kingsman (GB), currently the highest-rated 3-year-old in the world, came into the race having captured the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (G1) in dominating fashion in May. Godolphin's Ombudsman joins the rankings after defeating Anmaat (IRE) (123) by two lengths in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (G1). In his next start, the Night of Thunder (IRE) 4-year-old finished second by neck to Delacroix (IRE) (126) in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes (G1). Delacroix has joined the rankings in the co-fourth position off of that effort. Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Sovereignty, unraced since his Belmont victory in June, tops the rankings for the United States-based horses in the seventh slot with a 125 rating. The Godolphin colt shares that rating with Dubai Sheema Classic (G1T) winner Danon Decile (JPN) and European group 1 winners Calandagan (IRE) and Jan Brueghel (IRE).
