Midshipman Colt Tops Day 9 at Keeneland September

Topping the Sept. 17 ninth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale was a colt by Midshipman purchased by Wesley Ward for $270,000 from the consignment of Nursery Place, agent. Out of stakes-placed winner Tiz Rae Anna, by Tiz Wonderful, the colt is from the family of grade 2 winner Debutant's Halo and grade 3 winners Michael's Star and Yuvetsi. Nursery Place, Donaldson, and Broadbent bred the colt in Kentucky. On Wednesday, 316 yearlings sold, including post-ring sales, for $15,847,500, up 13% from last year's session gross of $14,045,000 for 316 horses. Average price of $50,150 was 13% above $44,446 last year. The median increased 14% from $35,000 to $40,000. Cumulatively, Keeneland has sold 2,224 yearlings for $508,114,500 for an average of $228,469 and a median of $140,000. The total is up 23% from the corresponding period last year when the gross was $412,061,000 for 2,189 horses. The average rose 21% from $188,242 in 2024, while the median increased 27% from $110,000. Also Wednesday, Aspire Equine purchased a colt by 2021 Horse of the Year Knicks Go for $210,000. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, he was bred in Florida by Mast Thoroughbreds out of the winning Quality Road mare Well Hello and from the family of grade 2 winner Wicapi. Two yearlings sold for $195,000 apiece. Arroyo Bloodstock, agent for Arroyo Syndicate and FTF, paid the amount for a colt from the first crop of grade 1 winner Drain the Clock. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent, he is out of the Uncle Mo mare Mo Cheeks and from the family of Nice Boots Baby, Orinoquia, and Top Line Growth. JAS/Costa purchased a colt by Honor A. P. consigned by Lane's End, agent, for $195,000. Out of Sense of War, a winning daughter of Street Sense, he is from the family of grade 1 winners Behrens and Commentator along with grade 2 winner Cowboy Cal. Bradley Thoroughbreds, agent for Rodeo Creek Racing, paid $185,000 for a colt by Karakontie (JPN) from the family of grade 1 winners Olympiad and Preservationist, and grade 2 winners Hungry Island, Waldoboro, Tara Roma, and Pleasant Passage. Out of the winning stakes-placed Kitten's Joy mare Hungry Kitten, he was consigned by Gainesway, agent For the session, Legacy Bloodstock led consignors with sales of $1,315,500 for 31 horses. Faris Breeding spent $705,000 on seven yearlings to be leading buyer for the session. The September sale continues Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. ET and runs each day through Sept. 20.
