After a successful Kentucky debut last month against allowance foes, John Gallegos' homebred One Magic Philly aims to make it 2-for-2 in her new home state as she reenters graded company in the $300,000 Chilukki Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs Nov. 15.
Formerly based in California with trainer Phil D'Amato, the 1-length victory at Keeneland Oct. 11 came in her first start from the barn of Brendan Walsh. The daughter of Good Magic displayed plenty of potential early in her career, winning the 2024 Chillingworth Stakes (G3) over 6 1/2 furlongs before being beat just 2 3/4 lengths in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) the following month.
Saturday's event will be her first time running a one-turn mile, and just the second time she's seen the distance overall. Her previous attempt came in her last California start at Del Mar Sept. 1 where she finished second, beaten 5 1/2 lengths, to this year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Splendora.
Tyler Gaffalione gains the mount, and the runner he may need to keep his eyes on the most is right to the outside of his post 6. That would be Godolphin homebred Ragtime, a 3-year-old filly taking on her elders in stakes company for the first time.
Although, Ragtime has faced older at the lower levels twice, winning her maiden and a first-level allowance by a combined eight lengths to kick off her career. Second beaten just a neck in the Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, she aced her first Churchill Downs attempt in winning the Dogwood Stakes (G3) by 2 1/4 lengths.
Last out in the Raven Run Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Oct. 18, she was shuffled back to last in a 10-horse field at the start before rallying on to finish third, beaten just a half-length. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott adds blinkers as the daughter of Union Rags races beyond 7 furlongs for the first time.
A potential up-and-comer—and a likely pace player—comes from the barn of Brian Lynch while wearing the Flying Dutchmen colors: Shred the Gnar. Another 3-year-old in the field, she made a solid impression when bouncing out of a neck defeat on debut to win her next two starts by a combined 13 1/2 lengths. Having already aced the course and distance, the Into Mischief filly returns from a six-month layoff.
Trainer Brad Cox enters a pair in Juddmonte homebred Impel and C2 Racing Stable and Bag Racing Stable's Literate. The latter, a grade 3 winner at Woodbine this summer, makes her first start for Cox after previously racing for Martin Drexler. Irad Ortiz Jr. picks up the mount.
The field is completed by Holly Hill Stables Runaway Diva, second in the Sept. 28 Delaware Handicap (G3) last out for trainer Michelle Hemingway, and Hoolie Racing Stable, Two Eight Racing, Kamp Racing Stables, and Legion Racing's stakes-placed Zadorsky for trainer Whit Beckman.
Preceding the eight-race Claiming Crown on the Saturday card, the Chilukki will be held as Race 3 with a post time of 1:58 p.m. ET.
