First Foal by Muth Arrives Jan. 1 at Gainesway
The arrival of 2026's foal crop by this year's first-crop sires got a fast start with Gainesway's Muth siring his first reported foal Jan. 1 at Gainesway. The Gainesway-bred filly is out of the winning Tapit mare Marlinspike, who also was bred and raced by Gainesway. The new foal is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Bullet (War Front). Marlinspike is out of the four-time grade 1 winner and 2000 champion 3-year-old filly Surfside (Seattle Slew), who is a daughter of 1994 champion 2-year-old filly Flanders. Muth, a 5-year-old son of Good Magic, topped the 2023 Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after agent Donato Lanni went to $2 million for the colt offered by Top Line Sales. He won grade 1 stakes at 2 and 3 for Zedan Racing Stables and trainer Bob Baffert, taking the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at 2 before finishing as runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). At 3, he won the San Vicente Stakes (G2) before capturing the Arkansas Derby (G1). Muth retired with a 5-2-0 record from nine starts and earned $1,589,600. Good Magic is a son of elite sire Curlin, who has sired two graded stakes winners so far out of Tapit daughters, including 2023 Horse of the Year and champion older dirt male Cody's Wish and grade 2 winner Tenfold, who was third in the 2018 Preakness Stakes (G1). Muth stands at Gainesway for $30,000.
