Parx, Mahoning Valley Cancel Jan. 20 Cards
Winter weather has led to the cancellation of racing Jan. 20 at both Parx Racing and Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course. Both tracks had also canceled racing Jan. 19. The National Weather Service reported a wind chill of 5° F Tuesday morning in the Bensalem, Pa., area, where Parx is located. In Mahoning Valley's Youngstown, Ohio, the NWS listed a wind chill of -14°. A report from the Paulick Report also attributed Monday's cancellation at Mahoning Valley to the jockeys opting not to ride out of "frustration" over a desire to increase mount fees. Although Equibase lists the official cancellation as weather, Paulick reported that horses had been in the paddock prior to the scheduled first race before the jockeys informed track management of their decision. Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., also canceled racing Monday due to cold weather. At the time of writing this article, the NWS listed a 21° wind chill Tuesday 3 1/2 hours ahead of their scheduled first post of 1:15 p.m. CT.
