Incoming Winter Storm Causes Racing Cancellations

Due to a major winter storm expected to hit a sizable portion of the United States, many racetracks have canceled upcoming cards. Heavy snow and ice are forecast for numerous regions, ranging from portions of the South, Midwest, and Northeast, according to the National Weather Service. This arctic blast, accompanied by gusty winds, will lead to low wind chills in some areas. Turfway Park announced the cancellation of its Jan. 23-24 cards due to forecast weather in the Florence, Ky., area. The canceled races from those cards will be offered as extras on subsequent race days, including the $125,000 Wishing Well Stakes. Races scheduled for Jan. 22 will continue as scheduled. Will Rogers Downs also canceled its Jan. 26-27 card, according to Equibase. Aqueduct Racetrack has moved its scheduled Jan. 25 program to Jan. 28. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races plans to race as scheduled Friday night, but has moved up its first post time to 5 p.m. ET. The change is to best ensure the entirety of the card can be run in advance of bitter cold forecast to arrive late Friday night. This story will be updated as more cancellations are announced.
