Baeza, Westwood Breeze for Eurton at Santa Anita

Grade 1 winner Baeza and Westwood, winner of the Jan. 31 San Pasqual Stakes (G2), each worked for trainer Peter Eurton Feb. 15 at Santa Anita Park. Baeza and Westwood, both owned by C R K Stable, were transferred to Eurton this week following the Feb. 12 death of their former trainer, John Shirreffs. Baeza, who is co-owned by Grandview Equine, drilled four furlongs in :48 4/5. It was the McKinzie colt's second work on the comeback trail since finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar Nov. 1. Eurton was in New Orleans, La., Sunday tending to his stable at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots and was unavailable for comment. Although with Eurton for now, owner Lee Searing of C R K Stable said earlier in the week that Baeza would likely end up being sent to a trainer outside of California. A 4-year-old gelding by Authentic, Westwood earned his first stakes win in the San Pasqual going 1 1/8 miles. He is a candidate for the March 7 Santa Anita Handicap (G1). One of Baeza's key rivals from 2025, the Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism, is nearing his first official workout of the new year. "He kind of ran through the lane yesterday," McCarthy said. "We have weather coming, so we'll see about (working) next weekend. It will depend on how much we're able to do with him during the week."
