Turfway Park's Bach to Retire After 25-Year Career

After 25 years with Turfway Park, including the past 13 as its general manager, Chip Bach will retire April 1, concluding a career that helped guide the Northern Kentucky track through significant change and into a period of sustained growth. Bach began his career at Turfway in 1999 as director of operations and human resources. In 2012 he was promoted to general manager, and later added oversight of Newport Racing & Gaming (historical horse racing) when it opened in 2020. "Being asked to become general manager of Turfway Park in 2012 was one of the most meaningful moments of my career," Bach said. "To be trusted to lead a place with such a rich racing history meant a great deal to me." As general manager, Bach helped oversee the track's transition into a revitalized racing and entertainment destination under Churchill Downs Inc. while strengthening the track's relationships with horsemen, jockeys, and regulators. He also played a key role in the successful opening of Newport Racing & Gaming during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and its continued growth in Northern Kentucky. "Chip has been an integral part of the success at both Turfway Park and Newport Racing & Gaming," said Matt Shehadi, vice president and general manager for Turfway Park Racing & Gaming and Newport Racing & Gaming. "His ability to lead across racing and gaming operations, while building strong relationships with horsemen, team members, and guests, has made a lasting impact on both properties." Among the highlights Bach points to during his tenure were several moments tied to Turfway's connection to the Kentucky Derby (G1). Animal Kingdom captured the 2011 Kentucky Derby after winning the Jeff Ruby Steaks, then known as the Spiral Stakes (G3). More recently, former Turfway-based jockey Sonny Leon and trainer Eric Reed celebrated their victory with Rich Strike in the 2022 Kentucky Derby after competing at Turfway that winter. "Chip's leadership has helped restore Turfway Park as a major player in Thoroughbred racing in Northern Kentucky," said Tyler Picklesimer, director of racing at Turfway. "Maiden special weight purses have grown from $18,500 to $100,000, the stakes program has expanded, and his work securing the Jeff Ruby Steaks as our signature sponsor helped put Turfway back on the national racing map." Beyond the racing program, Bach's impact was felt across the backstretch and throughout the property. "From the Kentucky HBPA's perspective, Chip has been a strong partner to Kentucky's horsemen at Turfway Park," said Alex Foley, executive director of the Kentucky HBPA. "He's approachable, listens, and is committed to working with horsemen." "In my 53-year riding career, I've worked with many track executives and general managers, and none have been better than Chip," said jockey Perry Ouzts. "I think I can speak for everyone in the jockeys' room when I say we'll miss him on a daily basis." After the races themselves, Bach said the people around the sport left the biggest impression. "What I'll miss most are the teams at Turfway and Newport, along with the riders and the people who stuck with Turfway Park during the difficult years," Bach said. "To see them now enjoy the new Turfway Park and the growth we've experienced has been incredibly rewarding." Throughout his career, Bach emphasized strengthening relationships with the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation, jockeys, and participants in the racing community—particularly during challenging periods when purses were low and winter weather often made conditions difficult during the meet. He also focused on creating memorable guest experiences. Turfway's Friday night promotions featuring $1 beer, $1 hot dogs, and live entertainment became a popular attraction in the Cincinnati region and were once recognized as "Cincinnati's Best Cheap Date." "The backdrop of these incredible horses, skilled riders and excited guests every race day is something I'll always appreciate," Bach said. "And being part of what I believe is the greatest racing company in the world made it even more special." Turfway will honor Bach on closing night Saturday with a fan appreciation celebration featuring live entertainment, giveaways, and discounted food and beverages.
