Napoleon Solo Up to Third in NTRA Top 3-Year-OId Poll

Following his victory in the May 16 Preakness Stakes (G1), Gold Square's Napoleon Solo rose from 10th to third place in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Top 3-Year-old Poll released May 19. The Chad Summers trainee trails the 1-2 finishers from the Kentucky Derby (G1)—top-ranked Golden Tempo and second-place Renegade—neither of whom competed at Laurel Park in the Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown. Golden Tempo and Renegade are awaiting planned starts at Saratoga Race Course in the June 6 Belmont Stakes (G1), the third and final leg of the Triple Crown. Preakness runner-up Iron Honor is also in the top 10 after Week 17 of the poll, landing in ninth place. He had been 19th a week earlier. The poll covers racing performances through May 17 and represents horses competing up to and through the Triple Crown. The accompanying Top Thoroughbred Poll—which isn't limited to 3-year-olds and is meant to mirror the leading competition for Horse of the Year while running through the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup in the fall—has one new top 10 addition this week: Burnham Square, who went from 12th to eighth after romping in Saturday evening's Louisville Stakes (G3T) at Churchill Downs. Magnitude, White Abarrio, and Sovereignty are 1-2-3 in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. All three could meet next in the $1 million Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) June 27 at Churchill Downs. Full results for both media polls are available online.
