Golden Tempo Solidifies Top Spot in NTRA 3YO Poll
Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable's Golden Tempo left no doubt who the best 3-year-old of the spring is June 6 when he added a Belmont Stakes (G1) victory to his May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1) triumph, and that was reflected in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Top 3-Year-Old Poll released June 9. All 29 members of the national media who voted in the poll this week placed Golden Tempo in the No. 1 spot. The Belmont trifecta placed that way in the NTRA rankings with runner-up and Florida Derby (G1) winner Commandment taking over the second-place spot, while third-place finisher and Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Renegade dropped from second to third. Woody Stephens Stakes (G1) winner Englishman, who like Golden Tempo is trained by Cherie DeVaux, ranked fourth after equaling the Saratoga Race Course 7-furlong track record Saturday. Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Napoleon Solo rounded out the top 5. Golden Tempo also received a first-place vote in the NTRA's Top Thoroughbred Poll, but missed out on breaking the top 10 by two points. Baoma and Coolmore's Nysos took over the top spot this week following a 4-length triumph in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1). He received 10 first-place votes and beat out Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Magnitude by two points. Other weekend winners joining the top 10 were True North Stakes (G3) winner Book'em Danno (ranked sixth), Manhattan Stakes (G1T) winner Deterministic (seventh), and Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) winner Nitrogen (ninth).
