Georgie's Warrior Breaks Maiden in Style
This column highlights the performances of 2-year-old and 3-year-old maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are graded/group winners, or have dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners, in particular, who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners. Georgie's Warrior dazzled in his maiden debut June 19 at Aqueduct Racetrack. In the 5 1/2-furlong test, the 2-year-old son of Nashville was bumped at the break under jockey Junior Alvarado and settled just off the leader Banker Bull through a quarter in :22.94. The Melanie Giddings trainee continued to travel in hand and made his move for the lead on the far turn. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Georgie's Warrior commanded the race and opened up on his rivals while hitting the wire 5 3/4 easy lengths in front. He completed the race in a final time of 1:05.62 and paid $5.54 as the second choice in the betting pools. He earned an 86 Equibase Speed Figure and a 68 Beyer Speed Figure in his first start. Owned by Melanie Giddings and John Naja, they purchased the colt bred by WinStar Farm for $215,000 at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale. In the first crop for freshman sire Nashville, Georgie's Warrior is out of the Pioneerof the Nile dam Jojo Warrior. From her nine starts, she found the winner circle three times, including wins in the 2014 Summertime Oaks (G2) and Torrey Pines Stakes (G3), as well as third-place finishes in the Cotillion Stakes (G1) and the 2015 La Canada Stakes (G2). She is the dam of six winners, including Impulse Buy, who won the 2024 Fern Creek Stakes at Churchill Downs. Hughes pulls clear to break his maiden Later in the week, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert saddled Hughes, who broke his maiden in style June 21 at Los Alamitos Race Course. Under jockey Joel Rosario, the 2-year-old son of Into Mischief battled for the lead down the backstretch with High Pronto, with the two colts posting fractions of :21.81 and :45.32. Hughes eventually took command and opened up on his competition as the field hit the top of the stretch. Pouring it on down the lane, he widened his advantage, hitting the wire 6 lengths the best. He completed the 5 furlongs in a final time of :57.22 and paid $3.20 as the post-time favorite. Hughes earned a 93 Equibase Speed Figure and an 81 Beyer Speed Figure. Owned by Front Row Club, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Bashor Racing, Albaugh Family Stables, Robert Masterson, Golconda Stable, Waves Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan, the colt was purchased for $675,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is out of the Union Rags mare K P Dreamin. She has had two foals find the winner's circle and, as a runner, she earned graded stakes placings when she ran third in the 2019 Chandelier Stakes (G1) and Starlet Stakes (G1).
