Debut Fifth for Hokkaido Shizunai School's Homebred
Rose High School, a 2-year-old filly by Mischievous Alex (Into Mischief), and bred by Hokkaido Shizunai Agricultural High School, made her racing debut July 4 at Hakodate Racecourse. At odds of 9-1, the fourth favorite trailed early after a slow start from the gates in the five-runner maiden for unraced 2-year-olds over 1,000 meters on the dirt. Despite making up ground on the far turn, she faded in the homestretch to finish fifth. Hokkaido Shizunai Agricultural High School in Shizunai City, which is located at the center of the horse breeding region on Hokkaido Island, is the only high school that breeds Thoroughbreds in Japan, and Rose High School, the sixth foal out of Atsuko, was cherished by school boys and girls with love and care. She was offered at the Hokkaido Hidaka Horse Breeders' Association September Yearling Sale in 2025 and was bought by Nobuyasu Kanaoka for ¥3,200,000 (approx. US$21,544 at the exchange rate on the sale day). "Though she stood calmly in the stall, she made an awkward start," said jockey Naho Furukawa. "She showed a good speed, and I believe she runs better next time." Hokkaido Shizunai Agricultural High School has bred multiple Japan Racing Association winners. Its most notable success is Yume Roman, a colt by Generous, who won three times and finished second in the Good Luck Handicap.
