Burnham Square Runs Down Rivals in Arlington Million

Whitham Thoroughbreds' Burnham Square now has the unique distinction of being a grade 1 stakes winner on both dirt and turf. Last year's Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner on the Keeneland main track notched his fourth consecutive turf victory in taking the Arlington Million Stakes (G1T) Aug. 1 over a firm turf course at Colonial Downs, wearing down the leaders with a determined wide rally. Sixth of seven horses early under Brian Hernandez Jr., Burnham Square began his bid on the second turn of the 1 1/4-mile turf race, and though the early leaders initially fended him off, he was able to assert his superiority late to inch clear of a stubborn runner-up Gran Oriente (CHI) by half-length at the wire. Dresden Row rallied to finish just a nose behind in third, edging out pacesetting Layabout for the show. The top four finished within three-quarters of a length of each other in an exciting finish. The winner was timed in 2:00.80 for the distance, rallying behind splits of :24.18, :48.85, and 1:13.70 set by Layabout. Popular with bettors after rattling off earlier turf victories this season in the Elkhorn Stakes (G2T), Louisville Stakes (G3T), and Chorleywood Stakes, Burnham Square paid $3.60 to win. Paco Lopez, aboard Gran Oriente, and Tyler Gaffalione, who rode Dresden Row, were both pleased with their mounts' performances in defeat, with Gaffalione remarking that Dresden Row was "just starting to get going." In contrast to Burnham Square's earlier graded turf victories, all of which were three-turn contests at 1 3/8 miles or longer, the Arlington Million was a shorter, two-turn contest. But as he displayed in taking the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass Stakes, Burnham Square is a versatile horse, with victories going as short as 1 1/16 miles on dirt, such as in the 2025 Holy Bull Stakes (G3). He is now 7-4-1 in 15 starts. He earned $607,600 in Saturday's $1 million race to advance his earnings to $2,884,244. A troubled sixth in the Kentucky Derby (G1) last year, Burnham Square has taken his career to greater heights this year at 4 on grass, a surface which trainer Ian Wilkes always felt he would prefer. His dam, Linda, won the 2016 Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2T) on the grass during her racing career. "He's made a great transition to turf," Wilkes said. "He's bred for turf, so that's the biggest asset. And he's got a great turn of foot. I knew this race would probably be my hardest to win of the other three (stakes he's run so far this year), because the mile and a half is more his forte." Plans call for him to race at that distance in Kentucky in upcoming starts, first in the $2 million Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes (G2T) Sept. 5 and then in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) Oct. 31 at Keeneland. Following Napoleon Solo and Deterministic, Burnham Square is the third grade 1 winner of 2026 for Liam's Map, who stood this year's breeding season for $50,000 at Lane's End in Kentucky.
