Fanshell Beach Initial Stakes Winner for Corniche
Fanshell Beach returned from her trip to Royal Ascot with aplomb, bouncing back from a fifth-place finish overseas to land the $200,000 Riverside Rush Stakes Aug. 1 at Ellis Park. With the victory, she became the first black-type winner for Ashford Stud's freshman sire Corniche. Breaking on top in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds, Fanshell Beach set a pressured pace of :21.73 and :45.38 over the yielding turf course, with longshot Super Saiyajin just a head back in second. As that foe faded to last in the stretch, Fanshell Beach drifted out but held sway over a rallying Crack On, crossing the wire a half-length in front in 1:03.79. Purchased by Hat Creek Racing for $80,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Fanshell Beach won her April 28 debut on dirt at Churchill Downs for trainer Wesley Ward, defeating subsequent graded winner Booked by 5 1/4 lengths. Her connections then sent the filly to Royal Ascot, where she ran an admirable fifth of 21 in the Norfolk Stakes (G2). Fanshell Beach was bred in Kentucky by Betz Thoroughbreds, D.J. Stables, Brian Graves, and Gainesway out of the stakes-winning Unusual Heat mare Pacific Heat. Corniche stood the 2026 breeding season for $15,000 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud. The son of Quality Road was named 2021 champion 2-year-old male after capping a perfect 3-for-3 season with a win in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). His first 2-year-olds have been well received at the sales, topped by two seven-figure juveniles earlier this year.
