Tomasello Scores Determined Victory in Singspiel Stakes

Tomasello, coming off a two-month layoff, prevailed in gritty fashion to capture his first career graded win in the $135,031 Singspiel Stakes (G3T) Sept. 5 at Woodbine. Racing for the first time since early July and ridden for the first time by Emma-Jayne Wilson, the 4-year-old bay colt broke smoothly from post position 4, as the field of 10 embarked on its journey in the 1 3/8-mile turf route. After showing good early foot, Tomasello settled in third along the rail, as Coburg and recent Niagara Stakes winner English Actor ran 1-2 through an opening quarter-mile in :24.82. That pair continued to race in tandem on the front end, with Wilson and Tomasello tracking from close range through an opening half in :49.96 and 6 furlongs in 1:14.29. As the field passed the 1-mile marker in 1:38.65, Wilson tipped Tomasello out to the three path and they launched their bid at the top of the stretch. Inside the three-sixteenths pole, the sprint for the wire was on as Side Street quickened outside of Tomasello and Dancin in Da'nile dove inside. As the trio hit the wire, it was the Mark Casse-trained Tomasello scoring by a determined half-length over Dancin in Da'nile. The final time was 2:16.67 on a course listed as good. Ironhorse Racing Stable and T-N-T Equine Holdings' son of Authentic paid $13 to win. Bred in Kentucky by Barry and Judith Becker, Tomasello improved to 5-2-2 from 12 lifetime starts for career earnings of $520,882.
