Geroux 'In Good Spirits' While Remaining in ICU

Jockey Florent Geroux remained in the intensive care unit through the evening of Sept. 14 at University of Louisville Hospital following a Sept. 10 spill at Churchill Downs, agent Matt Nakataini posted on social media. "Unfortunately, Florent has a few broken ribs and is still being monitored for any internal injuries," he posted. "We are hoping he can return home in the coming days." He noted the veteran rider is in good spirits. He further commended about the medical care the jockey has received. "Florent is focused on getting back to 110% as soon as he can," Nakatani posted, while expressing thanks for the support he and the rider have received following Geroux's injuries. Geroux was injured during the fourth race on the Sept. 10 Churchill Downs card when his mount Flip Flop Freak fell about a quarter-mile into the 6-furlong race. The 2-year-old, trained by Brian Lynch for Flying Dutchman Racing and Breeding, was fatally injured. The rider's injuries and hospitalization caused him to miss scheduled mounts later in the week, including aboard Zedan Racing Stables' unbeaten 2-year-old Salahudin, who was victorious in the Sept. 12 Iroquois Stakes (G3) under substitute rider Jose Ortiz for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. "We were thinking about Florent today," Ortiz said Saturday. A precise timetable has not been established for when the 39-year-old Geroux can resume riding.
