Three Well-Bred Juveniles Are Latest Hot Prospects

This column highlights the performances of 2- and 3-year-old maidens (the latter category only through June) with the potential for graded stakes success based on criteria such as a horse that has made no more than five starts and either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, has siblings that are graded/group winners, or has a dam that is a graded/group winner. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners. Well-bred juveniles Damavand, Winchester Road, and Mystik Bayou are the latest BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospects after promising victories last week. Damavand Runs to $1 Million Price Tag Showing marked improvement in his second career start after a debut fourth at Saratoga Race Course, Amo Racing USA's Damavand graduated from the maiden ranks with a long neck victory in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight contest Oct. 4 at Keeneland. After some jostling leaving the gate and approaching the first turn, the Not This Time colt worked out a favorable stalking trip under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez and was able to wear down a stubborn Belzoni, who had been a part of an early tussle for the lead through moderate fractions of :23.70, :48.82, and 1:14.22. The winner was clocked in a final time of 1:44.57, topped by a final sixteenth of a mile in :06.10. The Todd Pletcher trainee posted an 84 Equibase Speed Figure and a 75 Beyer Speed Figure. Bear in mind that speed figures for dirt route maiden winners are typically lower than those for sprint winners for 2-year-olds at this point in the racing season. He paid $7.48 for a $2 wager in defeating 10 juvenile rivals. Bred in Kentucky by Mark Stanley out of his graded-placed Bayern mare Tempers Rising, Damavand is a half brother to three-time stakes winner Owen Almighty. Damavand sold for $1 million last year out of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment to the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, six months after Owen Almighty won the Tampa Bay Derby (G3). With perhaps an allowance race in between, Damavand seems a logical candidate for a stakes test in another route this fall. Winchester Road Speeds to Victory at Woodbine A few days earlier, another pricey buy—the $750,000 purchase Winchester Road—won a quick maiden race at Woodbine in her second start. Racing with Lasix for the first time and shifted from Tapeta to race 6 furlongs on turf, the Quality Road filly took charge from the start, shook off a bid from green-racing favorite Arrabbiata, and pulled away for a 4 1/4-length victory over D'oro's Romance. She posted splits of :22.71 and :45.71 on her way to a final time of 1:10.92 under Sahin Civaci. She posted an 87 ESF and an 81 Beyer. Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse trains Winchester Road ($9.30) for owner Greg Tramontin. Helen Alexander bred the filly in Kentucky out of the Malibu Moon mare Weekend Away, and Tramontin's Greenwell Thoroughbreds bought her from the Gainesway consignment at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Her pedigree suggests she could stretch out. The dam's two earlier winners both won at a route. Mystik Dan's Half Brother Rolls at Belmont (The following initially appeared Oct. 3 in BloodHorse.) Wells Bayou, whose stallion career ended early because of fertility problems, has just one foal: the 2-year-old Mystik Bayou. But acting solo, the juvenile is doing his part to keep his sire in the headlines. Making his second career start Oct. 3 at Belmont Park, the Oklahoma-bred colt—a half brother to 2024 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan out of the Colonel John mare Ma'am—romped to a 4 1/4-length victory over favored Tap Our Way. Under Ricardo Santana Jr., Mystik Bayou covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.03, resulting in a 78 Equibase Speed Figure and a much-higher 88 Beyer Speed Figure. Mystik Bayou ($14.56) races for many of the connections associated with Mystik Dan: trainer Kenny McPeek, and Four G Racing, Lance Gasaway, and Daniel Hamby III. Lance Gasaway, Four G Racing, and Hamby campaigned Mystik Dan with Valley View Farm before his retirement to become a stallion at Airdrie Stud. Mystik Bayou was a well-beaten third in his debut behind Saturday's Champagne Stakes (G1) winner U. S. S. Valor Sept. 5 at Saratoga Race Course. The Brad Cox-trained Wells Bayou raced for Clint and Lance Gasaway, Madaket Stables, and Wonder Stables, winning the 2020 Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in his top achievement. The son of Lookin At Lucky retired with a 3-1-4 record in 11 starts and $935,303 in earnings. The Gasaways, wanting to support Wells Bayou at stud, bred him to Ma'am in 2023 after he entered stud at Caines Stallion Station in Oklahoma. Ma'am was reportedly one of just two mares to get in foal, and Mystik Bayou is his only living progeny. Other foals produced by Ma'am include 4-year-old filly Yes Ma'am (Unified), a winner of one of 11 races and $39,560; 3-year-old Ford's Ma'am, an unraced daughter of Knicks Go; and Mystik Brown, an Into Mischief colt born earlier this year. The breeding of Ma'am to Spendthrift Farm stallion Into Mischief, the leading sire for the past seven years, came after Mystik Dan's success on the track.
