Territories, Teofilo Colts Top Third Session at Arqana
A pair of colts by Territories (IRE) and Teofilo (IRE) shared top billing at the third session of the Arqana October Yearling Sale Oct. 22, with both selling for €110,000 (US$123,495; €1=US$1.12). The son of Territories will head to Ireland to be prepared for the breeze-up sales after selling to Mags O'Toole, while the Teofilo, consigned by Haras du Mont dit Mont, was bought by Jeremy Brummitt for Middleham Park Racing. Brummitt has enjoyed success with Teofilo's progeny, having purchased the talented Galilean Quality for €140,000 as a foal in 2023 at Goffs. He was subsequently snapped up by Middleham Park for 200,000 guineas at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year. "I like Teofilo's progeny and I've had some luck with them," Brummitt said. "Three years ago, I bought a fairly expensive Teofilo. He's now called Galilean Quality. He was very unlucky in the Melrose Handicap and I hope he'll become a Cup horse next year." The Territories colt was consigned by Fairway Consignment and bred by Al Asayl France. He was bought on behalf of Eddie O'Leary, with Alex Elliott signing the docket. Elliott is familiar with the family, having purchased the colt's dam Secret Sky, a stakes-placed daughter of Camelot (GB), on behalf of the Bryce family's Laundry Cottage Stud for €80,000 from the Arqana February Sale this year. Elliott said: "I've always been a big admirer of Territories. I was sad to see him go to India. I actually bought this colt's dam at the February Sale when Al Asayl was reducing its numbers, so he was very much on my radar as soon as the catalog came out. "He's been bought to go to the breeze-up sales with Eddie. I've signed the docket for Margaret O'Toole. Eddie really liked this horse and wanted to have him. I imagine he'll come back here for the 2-year-old sales." Powerstown Stud's Tom Whitehead got in on the action when going to €80,000 for Arcadia Elevage's colt from the second crop of Ballylinch's brilliant first-season sire Bayside Boy (IRE). Bayside Boy has been represented by 16 winners across Britain and Ireland this year, headed by his Gimcrack Stakes (G2)-winning son Arapaho Gold (IRE), while he has sired one winner in France in listed scorer Belisa Bay (IRE). A total of 112 lots sold Thursday at a clearance rate of 80%, while turnover rose by 19.7% from last year's corresponding session to €3.8 million (US$4,256,000), despite eight fewer lots changing hands. The average climbed by 27.5% to €33,930 (US$38,002), while the median increased by 35.7% to €28,500 (US$31,920). Across the three days, turnover edged up by 0.7% year-on-year to €22,121,500 (US$24,776,080), with 373 lots sold, compared with 357 last year. The clearance rate improved to 80%, while the median rose by 5% to €42,000 (US$47,040). The average, however, dipped by 4% to €59,202 (US$66,306). The final session of the Arqana October Yearling Sale begins at 11 a.m. local time Oct. 23.
