Somerset West, Green Carrera Top Autumn Miss Field
Somerset West, winner of last month's Music City Stakes (G2T) at Kentucky Downs, and recent European import Green Carrera (GB), a promising fourth in in the Del Mar Oaks (G1T) in her United States debut, lead a field of 11 sophomore fillies set to go in the $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) going 1 mile on turf Oct. 25 at Santa Anita Park. Somerset West, trained by John Sadler for owner/breeder Keith Abrahams, won the 6 1/2-furlong Music City by a half-length at odds of 19-1 Sept. 5. Prior to that, the daughter of Kantharos won her stakes debut in the July 18 San Clemente Handicap (G2T) for 3-year-old fillies going 1 mile on turf at Del Mar. She enters with a record of 3-2-0 in six starts with $1,056,375 in earnings. Green Carrera, a daughter of Lope de Vega (IRE) bred in Great Britain, won three times in seven starts in Europe when trained by Joseph O'Brien before coming stateside this summer. In the 1 1/8-mile Del Mar Oaks Aug. 22, Green Carrera was last of 10 with just a quarter-mile remaining but then rallied to be fourth, beaten 2 1/2 lengths. The winner, Tam Tam, came back to win the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1T) on Oct. 10 at Keeneland. Owned by Chivalry Thoroughbred Racing, Farfellow Farm, and Rancho Temescal Partners, Green Carrera will make her first start for trainer Leonard Powell.
