Geroux, Sidelined Due to Injury, Resumes Riding Nov. 5
Jockey Florent Geroux, injured Sept. 10 in a fourth-race spill at Churchill Downs, is scheduled to resume riding Nov. 5. The 40-year-old jockey has been sidelined since breaking multiple ribs in a fall after his mount, Flip Flop Freak, incurred a fatal injury at Churchill Downs. Geroux was monitored in a hospital for more than a week before being released. His agent, Matt Nakatani, wrote on X Oct. 29 that "It's a shame to miss Breeders' Cup, however Flo is eager to return. Looking forward to getting back in the saddle next week." A native of France, Geroux has won some of racing's biggest events, including eight Breeders' Cup races, and topped the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) with Gun Runner for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. This year, Geroux has ridden extensively in Kentucky for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. He rode Zedan Racing Stable's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) entrant Salahudin to win his first two starts before his injuries prevented him from riding the colt in the Sept. 12 Iroquois Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. Jose Ortiz subbed in the irons in the Iroquois and Tyler Gaffalione is aboard in the Breeders' Cup. Gaffalione gained the mount after Irad Ortiz Jr. broke his ankle. Geroux is named aboard two horses next Thursday at Churchill Downs: Donie Maronie in the third race for trainer Mark Casse and Schwarzenegger in the fourth race for trainer Wesley Ward.
