Prat Wins Shoemaker Award at Breeders' Cup

Flavien Prat, who guided three horses to Breeders' Cup victories Oct. 30-31 at Keeneland during the World Championships, won the 22nd Bill Shoemaker Award as the outstanding jockey of the event. The Shoemaker Award goes to the jockey who rides the most winners in the 14 Championship races. Ryan Moore also won three races on the weekend, but the award ultimately went to Prat with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second-through fourth-place finishes. Prat secured his second Shoemaker Award for the trio of wins that began on Friday with a rousing victory from Hughes in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1). He followed on Saturday with a dominant triumph atop Ways and Means in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) two races before piloting Further Ado to a dramatic nose victory over Owen Almighty in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1). Moore's three wins came in the John Deere Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) with Sun Goddess (IRE), the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) with Haffner and the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) with Benvenuto Cellini (IRE). Jose Ortiz landed in the winner's circle twice over the weekend, taking the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) with Kathynmarissa and the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) with Nitrogen. The Shoemaker Award is named in honor of one of the greatest jockeys in the history of Thoroughbred racing. Bill Shoemaker, who captured the Kentucky Derby four times, won 8,833 races in a career that spanned more than 40 years. In 1987, at age 56, Shoemaker won the Breeders' Cup Classic aboard Ferdinand at Hollywood Park.
