BC Classic Viewership Draws Largest Audience Since 2018
An average of 2 million viewers watched Sovereignty win the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland on NBC and Peacock during the race's peak viewership window from 6:15-6:34 p.m. ET, making it the most-watched Classic segment since 2018, according to NBC Sports. Saturday's race marked the first time since 1991 that two Kentucky Derby winners competed in the Classic. In addition to 2025 Derby winner Sovereignty, the $7 million race included Golden Tempo, this year's Derby winner, who finished sixth. The NBC audience measurement encompassed a 19-minute period surrounding the race, including the lead-up to the Classic and the post-race winner's circle celebration. The increased viewership coincided with the Classic's return to its traditional position as the finale of the Breeders' Cup program. When the Breeders' Cup has gone to West Coast venues, the Pacific Time Zone has complicated scheduling because NBC and other networks frequently televise college football on Saturday evenings for viewers in the Eastern Time Zone. This prompted the Classic to be carded earlier on the program, as it was last year, when the Classic was the ninth event at Del Mar, with three Breeders' Cup races still to follow. The Breeders' Cup will again be held at an Eastern Time Zone venue in 2027, when the event returns for the first time in more than 20 years to New York at a newly reconstructed Belmont Park.
