Carrie Brogden of Machmer Hall added to her collection of Unbridled's Song daughters Jan. 11 at the opening session of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale when she went to $350,000 for the 7-year-old mare Brandy in foal to Twirling Candy .

Brandy was consigned as Hip 167 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

"I was the underbidder on her when she was carrying her first foal for $470,000 when Mr. (Yehuda) Cohen bought her, and he outbid me then," Brogden recalled of the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. "Then he called me and we were talking about it and we wanted to do a mating. I actually did the mating for the Twirling Candy because he was booked full, I knew a shareholder season, and I did the mating for the mare."

Twirling Candy is among the stallions Brogden has had success with when mated to Unbridled's Song mares. Machmer Hall is the breeder of grade 1 winner and first-year Lane's End stallion Gift Box , who is by Twirling Candy out of Special Me (by Unbridled's Song).

"Unbridled's Song has made our farm, has paid for everything at Machmer Hall," Brogden said.

Brandy was bred in Kentucky by White Fox Farm out of the stakes-winning Gone West mare Alienated, also the dam of stakes winner and Woodward Stakes (G1) runner-up Rally Cry, and multiple grade 1-placed Alienation

The second foal out of Brandy, a short yearling colt by More Than Ready, sold one hip later to Rosemont Farm 2020 for $175,000. The yearling was also consigned by Taylor Made.

"Unbridled's Song is such a powerful brand on broodmares. That was one of the attractions of Brandy," said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales. "She had a really nice first dam and she was a beautiful physical. If you go back to when she was a yearling, she was picked out by Tom McGreevy for Fox Hill. She had the physical, she had the broodmare sire, and she had the first dam, and I think the covering to Twirling Candy was a really nice mating. I think they'll complement each other very well.

"Then she had a nice foal that was selling alongside her, a New York-bred. She's a mare that can sell Book 1 yearlings, Saratoga yearlings, wherever you want to sell them. The reserve (on Brandy) was much lower than that and there was a protracted bidding duel between about four different people just going back and forth. I thought that was a good price; that was fair."

Brogden said she has about 32 broodmares by Unbridled's Song on her farm.

"I owe everything to him. They're not making them anymore and my God, when (Brandy's) foal came back here, it just reminded me why I wanted her so bad," she added

Earlier Monday, Machmer Hall purchased Hip 21, a short yearling filly from the first crop of Good Magic  consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, for $37,000. The filly was bred in Kentucky by LNJ Foxwoods out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Sabi Sands and is from the extended female family of Storm Cat.
