Chuck Zacney, managing partner for Cash is King Stable, came into the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale in hopes of purchasing a few yearlings but quickly learned the competitive market would hold him out to the final day of selling.
The first purchase for Zacney was the Bolt d'Oro colt consigned as Hip 1332 out of the unraced Street Sense mare Gwithian, who is a half sister to 2017 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) runner-up Solomini . Zacney secured the colt for $230,000 from Fort Christopher's Thoroughbreds.
The third dam of Hip 1332 is grade 2 stakes winner Fleet Lady, is better known for producing sire and 2008 champion 2-year-old male Midshipman . In his championship season the son of Unbridled's Song captured the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), Del Mar Futurity (G1), and placed in the Norfolk Stakes (G1). Coming back the following year, he finished third in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) after setting all the pace.
Fleet Lady's daughter Fast Cookie, a grade 2 stakes winner by Deputy Minister, in turn has produced prominent sire and top runner Frosted . The earner of $3,972,800 on the track, Frosted stands as the third leading second crop sire in the country as of Oct. 28 and will stand for an advertised fee of $20,000 for 2022.
Bred in Kentucky by Clark Brewster, Hip 1332 is the fourth foal out of Gwithian, who produced a Bolt d'Oro colt this past term and was bred to Tapiture .
"We got a Bolt d'Oro earlier; we were concentrating on colts at the sale," Zacney said. "We are hearing a lot of good things about Bolt d'Oro, a lot of excitement there. We decided to dive in and try and get one, and we thought he was one of the best ones; we are happy to get him."
The second horse Zacney acquired over the phone with a little help from Boyd Browning Jr., Fasig-Tipton's president and CEO. Zacney picked up the Street Sense colt, consigned as was Hip 1580 for $290,000 from Burleson Farms consignment.
Bred in Kentucky by Nice Guys Stable, Hip 1580 is the first foal for the Medaglia d'Oro mare Lucky Cover, who is a daughter of multiple graded stakes victress Teammate (by A.P. Indy). As a broodmare, Teammate has beget multiple graded staked placed runner Team Colors and stakes winner Team of Teams.
"Big, strong, athletic, and a great page with Medaglia d'Oro on the bottom and Street Sense on the top. When I saw the horse, I just loved everything about him," said Zacney.
Zacney, based in Pennsylvania, indicated that both colts would likely go to Parx Racing trainer Butch Reid.
"I didn't do a lot of shopping at this sale. I came in last night. Bid on two earlier in the sale and didn't get them, so I had to step up my game and jump a little higher to get these colts."
