Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings' Barbara Banke added Downside Scenario to her broodmare roster Nov. 10, on the first day of selling at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The mare by Scat Daddy is in foal to leading sire Into Mischief , and sold as Hip 101 from Taylor Made Sales Agency's consignment for $1,150,000.

BlackRidge Stables' Will Daugherty watched from the back ring as the mare they purchased from the 2018 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale went back through in foal to the same sire as she was when they bought her for $250,000.

"It was a little above our expectations," Daugherty said. "We have had great success off the bat with the mare producing Mutasaabeq , and she has kept on delivering for us to the end."

"We have had a great partner, Randy Hill, in on her from start to finish, and I'm happy to see her move on."

BlackRidge Stables, which notably bred grade 1 winner Bast, breeds a few mares each year, keeping a few to race that fail to sell in the public auction ring. "We keep about eight or nine mares and hopefully, we can use some of today's proceeds to recycle back into the market," Daugherty said.

"We haven't bought anything yet at the sale; we had a small piece in Estilo Talentoso, which sold last night at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale for $600,000 to JS Company, and an Uncle Mo  (weanling) filly out of Heavenly Scat that RNA'd. We plan to take her on to the next level," said Daugherty. "We are looking to pick up one or two more this week."

The 2018 in utero foal ended up being grade 2 winner Mutasaabeq, who sold at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale for BlackRidge to Shadwell Estate Co. for $425,000. He ran third in the Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) as a juvenile and a month later ran second at Keeneland on the grass in the Bourbon Stakes (G2T). The Todd Pletcher trainee came out in early 2021 to win the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

"Downside Scenario has already had a good Into Mischief (Mutasaabeq) and is expecting another one this year. I like Scat Daddy mares," Banke said. "I can breed her to Curlin, and she is beautiful."

The strength in the yearling market all year and also seen at the "Night of the Stars" is showing to carry over for high-quality mares in foal to popular sires.

"I expected her to sell in the $900,000 range, but the market is strong," said Banke.

Twelve hips later Stonestreet added a youngster consigned as Hip 113 to their string for $250,000. The City of Light  filly out of Fast and Loose comes from the family of Miss Du Bois, the dam of Film Maker, a $2.2 million earner on the turf with multiple graded stakes scores. The bay weanling bred in Kentucky by Fred Hertrich III and John Fielding was offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Grade 2 stakes winner Vault, consigned as Hip 149 by ELiTE, agent, also became part of the Stonestreet haul when Banke signed off on the 5-year-old daughter of Jump Start at $850,000. A half sister to grade 1 winner Mirth, Vault was bred in Pennsylvania by Barlar out of the French Deputy mare Di's Delight. She became a stakes winner at 3 in the 2019 Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes at Laurel Park before clinching her big win at Belmont Park in the Ruffian Stakes (G2) this May. She was second last out in the Sept. 25 Plum Pretty Stakes at Parx Racing, moving her record to 7-8-2 from 25 starts, with earnings of $491,914.
