Eclipse Award-winning turf writer Marty McGee of the Daily Racing Form received the 2022 John Asher Derby Ambassador Award May 2 from a Louisville Knights of Columbus council at the Catholic organization's 60th annual Kentucky Derby Festival Charity Dinner.
The award was renamed for the late Churchill Downs publicist and radio journalist before being awarded in 2019 to Asher's widow Dee Asher. The award, previously known as the Dean Eagle Memorial Award, has been given since 1963 to a number of racetrack officials, jockeys, trainers, breeders, and media members. Those have included former Churchill Downs Inc. president Tom Meeker, breeder William S. Farish, former Keeneland president James E. "Ted" Bassett, journalist Jennie Rees, and the late veterinarian A. Gary Lavin.
