Starting Dec. 14, veteran race caller Tony Calo will fill in as the Turfway Park announcer while regular caller Jimmy McNerney recovers from neck surgery.

McNerney last week posted on Facebook that his surgery went well and that the doctor ended up removing his C5-C6 and the C6-C7 cervical vertebrae and replaced them with spacers. He said he was in a "bunch of pain but will be OK."

Belterra Park announcer Ed Meyer filled in for McNerney last week at Turfway.

Calo has been the announcer at Finger Lakes since 2008. His announcing career began in 1997 when he called races at Arapahoe Park in Aurora, Colo. He began as the regular track announcer at Northern California's Bay Meadows in 1998 and called at Golden Gate Fields starting in 1999.

Turfway is set to begin another four-day race week, from Wednesday through Dec. 17. First post on weekdays is 5:55 p.m. ET, and 12:45 on Saturday. Wednesday-Saturday. This week's featured race is Saturday's $125,000 Prairie Bayou Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles. Entries for the Prairie Bayou will be taken Wednesday.
