With the expanded summer turf schedule at Hawthorne Race Course, a pair of $100,000 turf sprints will be taking place on Sunday as some big names are entered in the five-furlong grass events. Race five on Sunday is the Inaugural running of the Lady Carey Turf Sprint for fillies and mares. Race seven is the inaugural Robert S. Molaro Memorial Turf Sprint for the boys.

Oeuvre Leads Lady Carey Turf Sprint

A fine field of nine is entered in the Lady Carey Turf Sprint, led by eight-time stakes-winning mare Oeuvre for owner Richard Perkins and trainer Chris Block. The five-year-old has won on turf and dirt, at sprints and routes, but the Lady Carey will be the first time Oeuvre will race at five furlongs in her career. A win in the Lady Carey would push Oeuvre's career earnings past $900,000 as the 5-2 morning line favorite will be ridden by Orlando Mojica. Second choice at 7-2 in the morning line is Rileys Redemption for trainer Mike Maker. The Indiana-bred was tested around two-turns in multiple stakes events last summer before shifting to sprints near the end of the 2023 campaign. She has never missed the board in five starts at five furlongs as she comes in off a strong victory in a tough allowance on the grass in Indiana in her most recent start. Samuel Bermudez will ride Rileys Redemption on Sunday. Trainer Wesley Ward supplemented Daring Do to the Lady Carey as she is an experienced turf sprinter. Her last six starts have come at five and a half furlongs, winning a pair of those races. Regular rider Walter Rodriguez comes in to ride the 4-1 third choice.

Molaro Memorial

Trainer Larry Rivelli was on the national stage early in 2023 when Two Phil's nearly won the Kentucky Derby, and he closed a career season as Nobals took the Grade 1 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint. The Turf Sprint champ has been supplemented to the Robert S. Molaro Memorial along with another accomplished Rivelli sprint specialist in One Timer.

(Editor's Note: Nobals and One Timer also are entered in the seventh race Sunday at Saratoga Race Course, with the latter being an also eligible.)

A ten-time winner of nearly $1.5 million, Nobals has won all three starts at five furlongs. He made noise when he took the Grade 2 Turf Sprint on Derby Day last year at 38-1 and closed with the Breeders Cup score at 12-1. Gerardo Corrales rode in both of those races and will be aboard the 9-5 morning line favorite on Sunday. Stablemate One Timer may pose the biggest threat to Nobals as he also makes his first start of 2024. A graded stakes winner of over $900,000, One Timer has won seven of twelve career starts, closing out 2023 with a near miss in the Grade 2 Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs last September. David Cohen gets the call on the 5-2 second choice.
