The first foal out of the 2020 champion 2-year-old filly Vequist is being offered at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale Sept. 12.

Mulholland Springs will consign Hip 1043 on behalf of Spendthrift Farm in the fourth session of the sale. The bay filly is by leading sire Into Mischief . He has sired 21 grade 1 winners, seven Breeders' Cup winners, and he became the first to sire back-to-back Kentucky Derby (G1) winners in 2021 with Mandaloun  following Authentic 's 2020 victory.

"We got a very nice first foal, athletic and balanced, she's a good representation. We bred the mare back to Into Mischief and got another very good foal. The mare seems to be throwing really nice individuals, we're really excited about where we are" said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm.

"She's taken exceptionally well to the whole environment and presented herself well. Who wouldn't want to have a daughter of a grade 1 mare by Into Mischief? We're always excited to sell for Spendthrift," said John Mulholland of Mulholland Springs.

Multiple graded stakes winner Vequist (Nyquist ) earned more than $1 million on the track, with her most notable win coming in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland. She was trained by Robert Reid Jr. for Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and breeder Swilcan Stable. In 2021, at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's marquee breeding stock sale, the Bluewater Sales-consigned filly sold for $3.4 million to Spendthrift Farm.

Vequist comes from a strong female family. She is out of the graded stakes-placed mare Vero Amore. She is the dam of six foals, all winners, including stakes-winning Vedareo, graded stakes-placed Mainstay, and stakes-placed Kiss for Luck.

"This (Hip 1043) is a good individual, a nice size, particularly for a first foal, and not dissimilar to the mare. Probably more similar to the mare than, say, maybe Into Mischief," said Toffey.

"I think it was the combination of the race record, and the physical (that drew Spendthrift to Vequist). When you have that kind of physical and that kind of ability, that's the most important thing we're always looking for."

Here's Mulholland's take on the filly: "You've got the leading son of Uncle Mo (Nyquist), and the perennial leading sire in the world (Into Mischief), so there's really not much to do other than just bring her out and present her to the people and let them decide for themselves.

"I think the top 10, 15, 20% oversells itself, and the rest you have to work for. That's just kind of the market we're in right now. But, if you have everything that the buyers are looking for, you're going to get rewarded even more than you might expect."
