Owner/trainer Juan Muñoz Cano, facing a pending Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit violation for the banned substance clenbuterol, had his Kentucky license suspended Jan. 2 pending an appearance before stewards in the state.
Clenbuterol has been used in equines as a bronchodilator, but its use has been banned or restricted in recent years due to its anabolic properties.
In a Thursday ruling posted on the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation website, stewards ruled their action was "for his alleged conduct against the best interest of horse racing." Entry of all horses owned and trained by him is denied "pending transfer to persons acceptable to the stewards."
The action follows an alleged HIWU violation for clenbuterol posted Dec. 20 but was in reference to the 10th race Oct. 31 at Churchill Downs from the Cano-owned and -trained La Bukana. The filly led early before showing signs of injury in the stretch. She was later euthanized with an injury to her right foreleg, per a stewards' report.
His HIWU case has not been adjudicated.
Cano, who began training in 2020, has 97 wins as a trainer from 782 starts made by his horses and stable earnings of $4,573,266.
Mr. Faversham, his one horse scheduled to race at Turfway Park Jan. 3, was scratched. He has other horses entered to run over the next week in Kentucky and Louisiana. Sanctions issued by state regulators are typically honored by other states via reciprocity.
